Florence W. Black

President 2005-2006

Born in Roseboro, NC, Florence has lived her whole life in Cumberland County.  In fact, she lives within a mile of the family farm where she grew up.

After graduating from Fayetteville Technical Institute in May of 1969 with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Accounting, Florence worked for a small accounting firm owned by a former IRS agent.  After he closed his practice, she worked as the comptroller for a Fayetteville business.  She returned to public accounting when Bobby Murphy hired her in 1976.  Florence worked with Mr. Murphy until his death.  In September of 1999, she opened her own accounting practice.

Florence is enrolled to practice before the Internal Revenue Service.  In 1989 she received her accreditation in taxation and accountancy from the Accreditation Council for Accountancy; in fact, she earned the highest score in the nation for that year in accountancy.  At their 2001 national convention, the Future Business Leaders of America recognized Florence as the National Business Person of the Year from North Carolina.

Joining the North Carolina Society of Accountants in 1977, she has been an active member of the Cape Fear Chapter of NCSA for twenty-eight years.  She joined the National Society of Accountants in 1984.

Florence is married to Larry J. Black, and they have one son, Michael.

   
Wayne O. Parker

President Elect 2005-2006

Wayne was born in Mt. Airy, N. C. and has lived in Winston Salem since 1967.  He graduated from Mt. Airy Sr. High in 1965 and attended Mitchell Jr. College, Statesville for one year in 1965-66 where he studied accounting.

He started his income tax preparation career with H & R Block in January 1972.  Where he later taught tax courses and was office manager one tax season.

In September 1978 he opened his own accounting and income tax practice.  He is enrolled to practice before the Internal Revenue Service and is accredited in Taxation by the Accreditation Council for Accountancy and Taxation.

Wayne joined the North Carolina Society of Accountants in 1986.  He has served the Piedmont Chapter as Secretary (2 yrs.), Vice-President (2 yrs.), and President (3 yrs.).  On the state Wayne has served on the Assistance Committee, Budget Chair, Convention Committee, PTI Chair and NCSA Board of Directors.

Wayne married his wife Sue August 20, 1966.  They have two sons Todd and David.  One grandson Coleman.

   
Stephen Metelits

Vice President 2005-2006

Stephen was born in Norwalk, CT.  At age 6 months, he moved to Glendale, CA, followed by a stay in Bridgeport, CT, and another move to Glendale.  Finally, the family moved to Wilmette, IL.  He attended New Trier High School and got a BS from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.  While at Northwestern, he met and married Joy.

After college, he worked for a number of computer software and hardware companies, ending up at Data General in RTP.  While there, he got an MBA from Duke University.  After being downsized out of a job, he decided to go into business for himself.  He has been in public practice since 1989.

He joined the Burlington Chapter, the NCSA, and NSA in 1990 as an Associate Member and became a full member as soon as he was eligible.  He has served as Vice President and President of the Burlington Chapter for two years in each office.  In the NCSA, he has served on the Constitution and By-Laws, the Tax Forum, the QAR, the Directory, and the Bulletin Committees.

In his "spare" time, he is Captain of the First Responders at the North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department and a national official with USA Track and Field (where tax time permits only working outdoor meets).

   
Ronald D. Powell

Secretary 2005-2006

Ronald was born at Shaw Air Force Base; South Carolina while his father was serving in the United States Air Force.  He graduated from Yokota High School, Yokota Air Base, Japan in 1976 and went on to East Carolina University where he completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Computer Science in 1981.  In 1991, he completed his Masters Degree in Computer Resource Management from Webster University, St Louis, MO; suma cum laude.

He purchased his practice from his father in 1996 and is the President of Powell & Powell Accounting, Inc., Asheboro, NC.  Mr. Powell has been preparing individual tax returns since 1989 and has been treasurer in various organizations to include a Budget Officer in the United States Air Force. 

He joined North Carolina Society of Accountants (NCSA) in 1996 as a full member and joined the National Society of Accountants (NSA) in 1999.  He represented NSA for two years as an Associate State Director for North Carolina. He has served on the NCSA Board of Directors, Legislative Committee, Audit Committee, Education Committee, Nominating committee and Tax Forum Committee.  Currently he is Chairman of the Tax Forum Committee, which meets each year with the Internal Revenue Service.  Since joining NCSA, he has been an active member of Central Chapter and has been President, Vice-President and Secretary.

In addition to his accounting career, he will complete 24 years of military service in December 2005 when he retires as a Lieutenant Colonel from the 53rd Aerial Port Squadron, Pope Air Force Base, NC where he has served as commander for the last six years.

Mr. Powell married the former Latefa G. Barnes of Denton on May 17, 1981 and they have two children, twins, Amanda and Robert.

   
Denise J. Hammond

Treasurer 2005-2006

Denise Jenkins Hammond was born and raised in Lenoir, NC.  She graduated from Western Piedmont Community College, with honors, receiving an Associate Degree in Accounting.  Denise entered the field of accounting and tax preparation in 1986 working with Delores Martin and Jack Williams.  She joined the staff of Lynanne F. Gray of Morganton in 1995.  The company is now known as Gray & Hammond, Accountants.

Denise is a member of both the North Carolina Society of Accountants and the National Society of Accountants.   In 1999, she received from ACAT the accreditation in Accountancy & Taxation.  She has held all positions in the Hickory Chapter, and is currently Secretary.  Denise has served NCSA since 1998, holding numerous positions: Board of Directors (3yrs); Directory Committee chair (4yrs), Public Relations Chair (4yrs), Tax Forum (3yrs), Education –ACAT (3yrs), Convention (2yrs), and Membership Chair (1yr).  

In addition to her activities with the state society and local chapter, Denise has served as treasurer of the Athletic Boosters at West Caldwell High School for 3 years, and is currently treasurer of the Athletic Booster at Gamewell Middle School.  She is also very active in her church.

Denise was married to Steve Hammond on November 13, 1982.  They have three children, Matthew, 18, Stephanie, 13, and Thomas, 11.

   
Rhonda H. Marsh

Immediate Past President

Rhonda was born in Monroe, NC.  She attended UTECH Community College.  She began working in the field of tax preparation in 1974, working for H & R Block.  In 1986, Rhonda entered public practice as an employee of Jense Haynes.  She established her own practice in 1993.  Rhonda is an Enrolled Agent and holds the Accredited Business Accountant designation from ACAT.

Since joining the North Carolina Society of Accountants as an Associate member in 1988 and as a Full member in 1991, Rhonda has served on the Board of Directors and as Secretary and Treasurer.  She has served on several committees including Education, Tax Forum and Quality Assurance Review.  Rhonda is also a former trustee and advisor for the NCSA Scholarship Foundation, Inc. She is a member of the National Society of Accountants and the Charlotte Chapter of NCSA, where she has served as Secretary and Treasurer.

Rhonda is married to Emmett Marsh.  They have two sons, Jamie and Dustin they are both newly weds and she now has two wonderful daughters, Heidi and Dawn.  The Marsh’s are members of the Marshville United Methodist Church.
